101 Hymn Stories by Kenneth W. Osbeck is another cool read about music and Christianity. I hope to write some articles on worship music and thoughts on music of the Lord.

#1 – Is it OK to play secular music on a DJ set as followers of Jesus?

- I think the higher road is to play only worship music that is in Spirit and truth. A secular producer cannot by nature make music according to the Spirit or in Truth. But also because a producer might be a Christian and might compose “Christian” music, the composition may or may not be pleasing to God. If we are to play music for others to worship, it would only make sense to play music that is pleasing to the Lord. There are also a number of compositions that have Christian lyrics that have been composed by wordly composers, like the setting of the mass, which is full of Christian lyrics. These compositions will never please the Lord, seeing that the composer never loved the Lord, and without love they are nothing but a clanging brass and a sounding cymbal so to speak.

#2 – Why do we make our music, to reach a crowd and spread our name or exalt the name and person of Christ

I know that there are at least three reasons that we make music and I’ll list them in order of importance.

1. To worship and exalt God- This is the primary reason to make music, to use it in our love for the Lord. I know that the music we compose, if it truly pleases God, will be part of our treasures stored up in heaven. We can’t take our instruments, but we can send our music ahead of us.

LITV: Revelation of John Chapter 15

[2] And I saw, as a glassy sea having been mixed with fire. And the ones overcoming the beast, and its image, and its mark, of the number of its name, were standing on the glassy sea, having harps of God. [3] And they sing the song of Moses the slave of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty, righteous and true are Your ways, King of the saints. [4] Who will not fear You, Lord, and glorify Your name? For You only are holy. For all the nations will come and will worship before You, because Your righteousnesses were made known.

There are two songs of Moses the one in Deuteronomy 32 and Exodus 15. It is my conviction that the song of Moses in Revelation, was probably a borrowing from the one in Exodus 15, which was written during Moses’s life. If a song is composed in Spirit and truth it would be impossible for it to pass away anyway.

2. To admonish other believers-

LITV: Colossians Chapter 3

[16] Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom teaching and exhorting yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

3. To do the work of an evangelist-

LITV: Psalms Chapter 18

[49] On account of this I will extol You, O Jehovah, among the nations. and I will sing praises to Your name,

#3 – Is it possible to infiltrate the club scene without compromising your righteousness and how?

I don’t see why any Christian would go into the club scene. I’ve heard tons of arguments for it but I’ve only really seen the negative effects it has on believers. You can’t eat at the table of demons and the Lord. How can you go to the house of the Lord and the house of Baal? If there is a Dj that would go to the club scene and truly preach Jesus, they would more than likely be thrown our or beat up or both. The message of the cross is offensive and will offend people if they go to the club to indulge in sin, period.
