I’m wondering how ya’ll feel about being a christian and being involved in martial arts? I know this can be a hot button for some people, but lets keep it to a dull roar…thanks.

My feelings, simply put, it depends on the person and the environment the art is taught in.

    What do ya’ll think?

well if you look at it from a spiritual eye a little deeper, martial arts has spiritual attachments to it, and just like doing yoga, there is an exercise part to it, which may or may not be harmless, and then theresx the spiritual part ie medetation and actually doing moves that are meant for worship of idols. i think its the same. if you do martial arts as a way to defend yoursedlf and take nothing from it but that, then it should be harmless, “SHOULD BE” is the key phrase considering there are soirits and principalities that go along with all things that arent in christ. if your not careful you could get some baggage that you dont want from some seemingly harmess martial arts lessons, or not. meh… i think im going a little too deep… thats my .02 anyway…

ive taken some karate classes in the past and i think as long as you don’t get caught up into any of the eastern religion crap then you’re fine… but i also know that a lot of ppl get caught up into it so… :?

mmm yes i agree. when i said environment i was referring to things like meditation and chanting and garbbage like that. but, i think it is possible to study a martial art (or teach) and not use the aspects of spirituality that can come along with them. some arts, in fact, have no connection to any kind of spiritual background. most do, but some don’t. chinese arts in particular must be scrutinized if you are interested in them. they are heavily connected to buhddism. another thing to that should be remembered is that english translation and interpretation of many of the arts is not always accurate. “martial art” for example, should be more accurately translated to “body art” or “body science” when considering many of the japanesse arts. and, many of the arts refer to a spiritual aspect of the art, when all they are really and honestly focusing on is a “mental” aspect. they call it spiritual because they think it is (based on many eastern religions) but it’s simply mental preperation. for example. i study ninjutsu, actually an ancient form of it, and before class we always what my teacher calls “meditate”. now i went into this class with the thought that if i saw anything that was leading to a spiritual (in the sense christians understand spiritual) aspect, i was out the door. well, meditation in my class is simply, and only, 30 secs of controlling your breathing. many law enforcement academys and even the military teach this, known as combat breathing. other than that….meditation in my class means nothing. so that is an example of the environment the art is taught in.

but yes, to sum it up, i agree that you have to be VERY careful when deciding to study a martial art. and, if it becomes something that consumes you as a person, it might not be heathly for you in that aspect either.

i kinda wish i got into something like that when i was younger, the only real combat stuff i know is what tghe army has taught me and its not all that cool. i mean i can subdue someone, but i dont know anything too super advanced. i took 2 weeks of tae kwan do in middle school, and i thought it was cool, but never really got into it… pitty

i actually just started a month ago….found another officer here at my work who just happened to teach the ancient ninja art of koryu bujutsu and i hooked up with him immediately. this stuff is so intense we basically swore to secrecy the techniques we are being taught. and lucky for me, the class is basically private lessons! just me and one other student being taught by a 1st dan and 4th dan (dan = black belt) and it’s nearly free!! and i found out they have a group in detroit that trains also. so it worked out well. actually, it was kind of a blessing because the job i am in process for with the FBI is not armed, but will incure decent risk upon myself. so it will be more than useful. right now, at least i carry a gun at work…. :?
