I recently read some info that basically said that sports are not from God and that actually they do more bad than good in our lives. It went on saying that Jesus never did sports and that even Paul that had greek influences neither did sports cuz its a waste of time. It basically said that they are only permitted for children and not even them should practice regular sports. it added that if u wanted to do exercise for ur health do activities like walking to ur job, working on the house, cleaning ur car that that are of benefit and not for entertainment. I was really bummed out when I read this cuz I have been an athlete all my life and I love sports. I actually am starting a couple of sport related activities to get some extra income. Now Im not sure. I have been looking for answers on my church archives of anything related to sports and really can’t find anything going either way just that its good for children for socializing. What do u guys think? have any answers?

Who’s to say that something isn’t, other than the perversions that Satan does, God inspires us to create many things.

Bible doesn’t account for everything in Jesus’s life if I’m not mistaken, so again, who’s to say he didn’t? Unless we have historical records that he didn’t.

those are almost useless when it comes to fitness other than if you’re already in shape. If they were great, I would be thin.

if it becomes a god in your life, then yeah, not a good thing. That’s the only thing I can say it does more bad. Like if it takes up more time where you could be having a quiet time or ministering to someone.

For fitness reasons, 30-60 mins a day is plenty to get a good workout in.

For example of the bad, my town practically worships it. There are people up there every day when baseball, teeball, and softball are in season, even on Sunday!! That’s unehealthy to have half or more your week there.

Good side, it is a ministry opportunity. Dad and I were talking about other day about the skateboarder that started a church and was looking to plant another in the UK.

Though our church last year, decided to trim some of the ministries it was for good cause so that they can focus on few things and do them great. So church might not be doing a youth basketball night, small groups can take it to the inner city and do ministry.

Hopefully you like sports, not love it. I see nothing wrong with playing sports every so often even using it as an outreach ministry.

You have to be careful and use little discernment when reading artciles and books from christians these days. I fully believe some are just religous practioners and just doing that sunday thang.

Just don’t let sports take too much time away from things that can further the Kingdom and even your relationship.

dude what a load of crap. seriously. the Bible tells us to take care of our bodies (temples) and what better way then working out / playing sports. plus it can be an opportunity to witness and make new friends.

whoever wrote that article must suck at all sports… :D

yea this is all my wife and me have been discussing. before I would say I had it as number one in my life. Which was a problem because I wasn’t saved and my wife (gf at the time) didn’t like it at all. Things has changed and now I have God first which is the right way i beleive. I do enjoy once in a while see some sports and practice them for having fun but I have clear my priorities. Now as a retired volleyball player, i have seen the benefits the sport has had in my life but having Jesus in my life is far much better. Now I am looking forward to giving some volleyball clinics and minister through them with christian music, and teachings about life while having fun and doing something we all like. I beleive God has confirmed me that it is going to be for his glory but that info I read really confused me. I remember my pastor had said it was a great idea so im going forward with it and hopefully God will show me the way.

How many professional athletes that are in stardom have used their status for “Kingdom” things? ALOT!

Kurt Warner, Tony Dungy, Tom Landry, Mike Singletary (yeah hes a chicago boy!), Dave Dravecki (if you dont know about him google him, AMAZING STORY!), James Naismith (the INVENTOR of basketball, was an ordained minister), Meadowlark Lemon (Harlem Glabetrotters), Reggie White, Mary Lou Retton, David Robinson, Walt Weiss, Oral Hershhizer, AC Green, John Smoltz, Jackie-joyner Kersee, Steve Largent (now in congress).

This is a small piece of the list of professional athletes that have AMAZING gifts that God gave them. And they have chosen to use their gifts as a platform to spread the word of God.

So, whoever it is that said that………..THEY ARE WRONG. :)

thats good to hear! yea the info i thought was kinda taking the bible too literal which is not correct. It was also stating things like that sports there are bets, violence and attitudes like selfishness and envy but i guess that everywhere in our jobs, the lottery, etc. so I beleive it doesn’t necesarily make sports a bad thing because in that manner everything would be. It also said it puts us to compete but I beleive its a healthy competition because then everyone is all bout hugs and hand shakes and socializing making freinds. I guess its the manner in which u play them, see them and use them is what makes the difference. Im all bout having fun, learning from them and using it for positive things. If i can minister through them better yet. Hopefully with the income from the clinics I’ll be able to buy my dj equipment… oh yea! Now we’re talking! God this is for u!!!
